Marquel Dionne, a native of Fort Worth, TX, lived in New York, NY for 7 years. Ms. Dionne toured Europe with the Harlem Gospel Singers. She performed with 8 other singers in various opera houses and performance venues in Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, The Netherlands and Denmark. She was both an ensemble and featured artist singing gospel, Motown soul and spirituals. Ms. Dionne was also a resident artist in Louisiana performing children's opera/theatre in public schools and other various venues.
She has performed at The Winspear Opera House with The Dallas Opera, The Meyerson Symphony Center (Dallas, TX), The Wortham (Houston, TX), and Bass Performance Hall (Fort Worth, TX). She has sung with the Opera Company of Brooklyn, Abilene Opera Association, Fort Worth Opera Company, Opera North(NH) and the Shreveport Lyric Opera. Her opera roles include Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus, Carmen in Carmen, Suzuki, Madame Butterfly, Magda Sorel in The Consul as well as several others. She made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2003 with Pacific Opera Company.
As a young girl, Ms. Dionne played 4 musical instruments and performed gospel, R&B, pop and jazz in her hometown. Ms. Dionne is very versatile with her vocal and musical styles. She was a back up singer for Kaleta who was the former guitar player for the great Afrobeat musicians Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade. This group performs at several venues in NYC such as Zinc Bar, Sugar Bar and Satalla. Kaleta et al performed at Prospect Park for the African Music Festival and the Festival International Nuits D’afrique de Montreal in Quebec. Ms. Dionne also did back up vocals for the Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble where she has performed at Knitting Factory, Bowery Ballroom and Piano’s. Akoya performed at the Montreal Jazz Festival in Quebec, the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues Festival in Kelwona, British Columbia and the AfrikaDay! Music Festival in Calgary, Alberta during a mini-summer tour.
Another side of Ms. Dionne’s talent and versatility is her comedy/improv skills. She was formerly a member of a troupe called “Eight Is Never Enough.” “Eight” has been featured at Caroline’s on Broadway, Dillon’s Cabaret, Rascal’s Comedy Club and have a weekly spot at The Improv.
Since returning to the DFW area, Marquel has performed her show Nostalgique for private parties and venues.
Marquel is also a Certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher. She teaches yoga in Fort Worth, TX. Ms. Dionne resides in Arlington, TX.
Ms. Dionne is currently singing chorus with The Dallas Opera.
